It would be good for a feature to preview how the document would look like when its done

when you are writing something on it could there be a feature to preview what your work would look like when done?

Sorry, forgot which website this was on :) Thought this was posted on Revolution.

About the STE editor… I'm planning to add a "live preview" feature that shows you a preview as you write… but that's a long way away.

I'm planning to add a mini-parser on my editor's next release (v0.4). It will be a JS based parser for basic formatting (w/o modules and stuff).

I'm going to have to keep competing with you tsangk! :) Maybe I should try to figure out how to do that live preview idea sooner rather than later so I can match what you're doing :P

Hi Shane!

Just tried out STE, a great tool! But what I was instantly missing was a preview button… otherwise it's just a text editor with pre-defined "text-blocks" that you can insert to the text.

Personally I think that preview button would be better than live preview, because with netbooks (and other devices with small screens) it takes too much space to have two windows open side by side.

Edit: Why don't you join forces with Ken? If you're doing the same thing, it would speed up the development a bit.

Glad you like the program! :) It'd be awesome if you could give me your thoughts on the new features when I release new versions, so that I know what areas to work on in the future. Recently the release threads aren't getting any comments.

And creating bug reports & feature requests as well if you find something that needs to be changed.

Getting back on topic; I've been working hard to get Wikidot API access working and now I know for a fact that preview can definitely be done. I'm already planning to add it to STE very soon, along with a few other surprises. :)

Have just created this account for the new preview feature. You will have the option to interact with the Wikidot servers using your own username as well, but you need your own API key for that.

Does that mean we can use the STEBot account to access public sites, but we'll need an API key to access our own private sites??

Edit: Hold on, I think I'm getting ahead of myself here! This is just for preview, no interaction with sites just yet?

No, the API doesn't allow public access to sites for some reason. You have to be a member to edit a site with the API, even if access is given to anonymous users to edit in the web version.

Basically, STEBot will be used for a single site where previews are hosted (the 'preview' function in STE will require an Internet connection). That site is http://preview.wikidot.com

If you have your own API key you will be able to generate previews on one of your own sites instead. So far no other API-related features have been implemented.

So will it be possible at any point in the future for previews to be generated locally (i.e offline), or will you always need the help of the wikidot servers??

I can't say for sure at this time. I definitely want to do that.

It shouldn't be too difficult for me to generate a HTML file and save it to the local file system, but at this time you'd need an active Internet connection so that I can contact the Wikidot servers, pass them the source code and get the HTML in return.

One thing is certain: with an Internet connection you're getting the latest version of the Wikidot parser. With any offline version it'll be temporarily out-of-date whenever Wikidot makes changes to the way their parser works, or when they add new modules, etc.

Since I wrote those last two posts Import & Export have been done as well. You can see those, as well as the new Preview option, IMPLEMENTED in Version 2.0.

Hi leiger,
I use your STE on a test basis ( online) on my business laptop ( and my private machine too) for some great pages…
It works well and fast enough - only the button - info text ( hover) is a littlbe bit slow araising - but in the documentation I cannot find ANY information about preview and how I can use it on my OWN sites.

Even the use of your "preview" site is not documented well.

I can only see tne setup fields with preview and p…. and this does not work if I try it..

I miss an explanation how it does work.. ( I can imagine, but this is not the same..)

By the way: well done!

Regards
Helmut

Hey Helmuti, can you try reading this and see if it's the instructions you need? Configuring the Wikidot API Settings

As for the hover … are you referring to the tooltip on the buttons? I can make that appear a bit sooner if you'd like (please make a new thread in the section:requests section for it)

but in the documentation I cannot find ANY information about preview and how I can use it on my OWN sites.

Helmuti, I wrote up a piece of the documentation that exlains how to configure the API tab in STE, which includes an explanation of how the preview settings work:

Thanks - this helps a lot!
It explains the field content very well - ands the environment needed.

And the tooltips (yes, these tooltips were slow araising) - test will need more time… I am now on vacancy - perhaps at the afternoon…

Regards
Helmut

If I remember correctly, I've already added labels to those boxes in the next version - it's just not been released yet because I plan to add more to it first.
