**STE **

I would like to see if there can be a seperate version of STE for a mobile device using JavaME, i got a reply from leiger saying it would have to be a completely seperate version but he also told me that he would be able to get the API to work

Yes, using kXML-RPC I think it should work.

What should this app do? Just import and export?

do you think it would be possible to add most of the features of the java version to a mobile version?

I think that it would be a better option if I was to develop a version of STE for Android devices.

Most smartphones today run Android with a modified front-end, so it would run on most major smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S and the HTC Desire HD (both of those run Android 2.2).

The problem is though, that I don't think that would benefit you titen96? :( It wouldn't even benefit me, as I don't have an android phone myself either - though I plan to get one as soon as my current contract expires in 4 months ;-)

i don't really care if it benefits me maybe you can make one for both, also i'll probably get an adroid phone in 9 months when i get an upgrade

My last post is incorrect - I've purchased a HTC Desire HD and have begun testing development on it.

The Android implementation of Java does support XML-RPC, and whilst <nil/> is not yet supported the developer just posted 2 days ago that he plans to implement it within the week. As Wikidot uses <nil/> quite a bit in their API, it's a necessity if something like STE is to be developed for Android.

I will rename this with from "STE For JavaME(Mobile)" to "STE for Mobile Devices" so that it's more generic.

At first I will focus on Android, then based on the time it takes to develop that I might consider other platforms (e.g. iPod/iPhone). I don't think many people will use a JavaME one so not worth spending several days building it :(

P.S. Titen, if you want this you should rate it up :) Only I have rated it so far, giving a total rating of 1.

Yes. Developing is free, but putting an application on the App Store costs money, and is subject to Apple approving it first. I'm not going anywhere near iPhone/iPod development any time soon.

Even free applications cost the developer money to put on the Apple App Store, yes. I think it's a yearly subscription, but I'm not entirely sure on that one.

Only 1 response to the Android users' survey that I posted as an announcement, so I'm going to reject this for now and will cancel development of the Android application. I might start it up again if there is enough demand for it.

Could those people that voted for this wish tell me which mobile device you are using? Would you prefer an iOS app? Or a JavaME application?

That's a sensible decision. I think your time is better spent making the "full" version sing and dance!

You have an Android phone… but you want an iOS application? :S Or do you have both, and either platform would be fine? I'm a bit confused here :)

leiger: Even free applications cost the developer money to put on the Apple App Store, yes. I think it's a yearly subscription, but I'm not entirely sure on that one.

To clarify, I've since looked into this.

  • Apple's developer program (for iOS) costs $99 per year.
  • Google's developer program (for Android) costs $25 per year.

So both require payment to put an application on the market.

  • With iOS devices, you need to unofficially jailbreak the device if you want to bypass the market.
  • And for Android devices, you can tick a box in the settings screen to enable installation of apps from the web browser.

So Android is a much more developer-friendly option.

Then there's a third alternative: Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft is actively supporting users that wish to jailbreak their phones, even going so far as to work with a jail-breaking group to make sure that their methods will allow jail-broken phones to continue receiving OS updates & new features.

So WP7 is also a good option. But the official method (WP7 Market) will probably cost money as well - I haven't looked exactly how much that is yet.
